Regarding the Oct. 16 Metro article “Virginia launches fund for victims of mass violence”:
We support Virginia’s recent launch of the first permanent fund in the United States for mass-shooting victims. It is crucial to provide assistance and support to those affected by such tragic events. Antique Wooden Box

However, we cannot help but raise concerns regarding the broader impact of gun violence in the D.C. metropolitan area. The shooting in Chesapeake last November, which claimed the lives of six individuals, is just one example of the devastating consequences of gun violence. Yet, it is important to recognize that Virginia experiences about 1,000 gun deaths annually.
We believe it is essential to allocate public funds to address the impacts of all fatal shootings — not just the ones classified as mass shootings. The trauma experienced by the families and communities affected by these incidents also requires attention and support. It is crucial to prioritize prevention and take proactive measures to prevent these deaths from occurring.
Although we commend Virginia for supporting mass-shooting victims, we urge policymakers and the community to consider the broader impact of gun violence and allocate resources accordingly.
